John C. Sorenson Elected to Venomix Board of Directors

KALAMAZOO, Mich., February 10 – Venomix, Inc., is pleased to announce that John C. Sorenson, Ph.D., has been elected a director of the company. Sorenson is retired from Syngenta where he was president of Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc., in Raleigh, N.C. Prior to that, he was president of Syngenta Seeds, Inc., in Minneapolis, Minn.

“John will be a strong addition to the Venomix Board of Directors,” said John L. McIntyre, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Venomix. “With a background in both research and development and management he is ideally suited to help us navigate the difficult path from concept to product. John’s experience in the agricultural seed and biotech industry is a strong plus for us as we continue to develop our spider venom peptides as commercial insecticides.”

Sorenson has a broad background in plant biotechnology, both in academe and in the private sector. As president of Syngenta Seeds, he led the acquisition of three regional seed companies, which tripled the company’s U.S. corn and soybean seed businesses. As president of Syngenta Biotechnology, Sorenson directed the phaseout of the company’s medical business and refocused the company on biofuels and crop biotechnology. Prior to joining Syngenta, Sorenson was president of Rogers Seed Company in Boise, Idaho. Sorenson’s experience also includes plant biotechnology research and development with Asgrow, an Upjohn company in Kalamazoo, Mich. Before moving to the private sector, Sorenson was a tenured associate professor at North Carolina State University. He received his doctorate in biology from the University of South Carolina.

Venomix is developing a new generation of insecticides using peptides from spiders. The company’s technology is based on ground-breaking research conducted at the University of
Connecticut. Over 50 unique, spider-venom peptides have been identified. This patented technology is exclusively licensed to Venomix. Products under development have a unique mode of action, are highly effective against insects and related pests and are harmless to non-target species, including humans. Target markets include agriculture, animal health and specialty non-crop uses such as household insects. Venomix products will be ideally suited for the environmentally conscious twenty-first century.
